1MUMBAI – On the eve of one of the biggest matches in recent history, the Indian camp has been hit by a significant selection concern. Power-hitter Rinku Singh is a major doubt for today’s T20 World Cup semi-final against England at the Wankhede Stadium. Reports from the final training session suggest that the left-hander is nursing a minor niggle, forcing the team management to reconsider their middle-order balance.

Rinku Singh has been a vital “finisher” for India, providing late-inning fireworks that have rescued the team on multiple occasions during the Super 8 stage. His potential absence opens the door for Abhishek Sharma to retain his spot at the top of the order, potentially pushing Sanju Samson or Suryakumar Yadav into a more flexible middle-order role.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav were seen in deep discussion near the Wankhede pitch this morning. While Rinku participated in light drills, he did not take part in the full-intensity net session, sparking rumors that India might opt for an extra bowling option or a more stable batting anchor if the pitch plays slower than expected.
The curators at Wankhede have prepared a traditional red-soil surface, which usually promises plenty of pace and bounce. However, there are visible patches of green grass left on the strip to keep the surface bound together under the intense Mumbai sun.
Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel highlighted that while the pitch looks like a high-scoring one, the “dew factor” in the evening remains the biggest variable. “At Wankhede, the game changes once the lights come on,” Morkel stated. “We have to be prepared for the ball to skid on, which makes the role of our pacers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, even more critical.”
England, meanwhile, looks to be at full strength. After a rocky start to their campaign, the defending champions have found their rhythm. Jofra Archer has been the standout performer, leading the tournament with the most wickets taken in the powerplay. His upcoming “cat-and-mouse” battle with Sanju Samson, whom he has dismissed three times in previous T20Is, is being touted as the match-defining rivalry.
England captain Harry Brook has remained vocal about his team’s aggressive approach. “We aren’t here to play safe,” Brook told reporters. “Wankhede is a ground that rewards bravery. We know India is tough at home, but we’ve shown we can handle the noise.”
For India, the key to victory may lie in the “mystery” of Varun Chakaravarthy. The spinner was a nightmare for England during their bilateral series earlier this year, claiming 14 wickets. Although his form dipped slightly in the Super 8s, he was seen putting in a massive shift in the nets under the guidance of the coaching staff. If Varun can find his length on the Wankhede surface, England’s middle order notably Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran could find themselves in deep trouble.
With a capacity crowd expected and the weather forecast remaining clear, the stage is set for a historic encounter. Should the match be affected by any unforeseen circumstances, the ICC has a reserve day in place, but India will be keen to finish the job today and secure their ticket to Ahmedabad for the Grand Final.
