India Edge England in 500-Run Thriller to Reach World Cup Final

Final Bound: Samson and India Survive Jacob Bethell’s Heroic Century in Wankhede Run-Fest

MUMBAI – In arguably the greatest T20 World Cup match ever played, India secured their place in the 2026 Final after a heart-stopping seven-run victory over England at the Wankhede Stadium. On a night where nearly 500 runs were scored, it was a combination of Sanju Samson’s clinical power-hitting and a masterclass in death bowling from Jasprit Bumrah that finally broke English hearts.

The Samson Show: Setting the Tone

After being put into bat by England’s Harry Brook, India unleashed a relentless assault on the visitors. Sanju Samson, continuing his dream tournament form, smashed 89 off just 42 balls, including seven massive sixes. He was particularly brutal against Jofra Archer, taking 61 runs off the pacer’s four overs.

Despite losing Abhishek Sharma early, India never took their foot off the gas. Cameos from Shivam Dube (43 off 25) and Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) pushed India to a monumental 253/7—the highest-ever score in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Jacob Bethell: A Star is Born

England’s chase looked dead in the water when they slumped to 119/4, with Phil Salt and Jos Buttler falling early to Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy. However, 22-year-old Jacob Bethell produced an innings for the ages. The youngster smashed a 45-ball century, finishing with 105 runs that kept England in the hunt until the final over.

Bethell’s clean hitting and “supernatural composure” (as described by Eoin Morgan) stunned the 35,000-strong Mumbai crowd. Alongside Will Jacks, who contributed 35, Bethell brought the equation down to 30 needed off the final six balls.

The Final Over Drama

With the pressure at a breaking point, Shivam Dube was tasked with the final over. Despite Jofra Archer hitting two late sixes, the target proved just out of reach for the defending champions. England finished on 246/7, falling short by just seven runs.

The turning point was arguably Axar Patel’s extraordinary piece of fielding earlier in the innings. His running catch to dismiss Harry Brook and a crucial “assist” for another wicket shifted the momentum back to India just as England threatened to run away with the game.

The Road to Ahmedabad

India now travels to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to face New Zealand in the Grand Final on Sunday, March 8. The Black Caps reached the final following Finn Allen’s record-breaking century yesterday, setting up a clash between the tournament’s two most dominant batting units.

“We knew 250 was chaseable here at Wankhede,” said Player of the Match Sanju Samson. “We just had to stay calm when Bethell was going. Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler, and he proved it again tonight.”

  • England: 246/7 (20 overs) – Jacob Bethell 105, Will Jacks 35
