1KANDY / LAHORE – The Pakistan cricket team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup has been further overshadowed by a serious off-field controversy. Reports emerged on Thursday that an unnamed member of the Pakistan World Cup squad was fined and penalized following an incident of alleged misconduct involving a female staff member at the Golden Crown Hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

According to sources within the team management, the incident took place shortly before Pakistan’s final Super 8 fixture against hosts Sri Lanka. It is alleged that a player from the traveling party misbehaved with a member of the hotel’s housekeeping staff. The situation reportedly escalated when the staff member raised an alarm, leading to immediate intervention by hotel security and senior management.
The Golden Crown Hotel management initially demanded strong legal action; however, the matter was addressed internally after Pakistan Team Manager Naveed Cheema issued a formal apology to the hotel and the individual involved. The player in question was subsequently fined a significant portion of his match fee as an immediate disciplinary measure.
While the player’s identity has not been officially disclosed to the public, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the matter is far from over. Upon the team’s return to Lahore, the individual is expected to be summoned before a high-level disciplinary committee.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly been briefed on the situation and has expressed his displeasure, emphasizing that any breach of the code of conduct—especially involving the team’s reputation on foreign soil—will be met with the strictest possible sanctions. This could include a lengthy ban from international cricket and a heavy financial penalty.
The scandal comes at a particularly low point for Pakistan cricket. Under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha, the team struggled for consistency throughout the T20 World Cup, ultimately failing to secure a semi-final berth based on net run-rate despite a narrow victory in their final match.
The off-field drama has invited harsh criticism from former players and fans alike. Many have pointed to a “lack of discipline” within the current setup as a primary reason for the team’s inability to perform under pressure in major tournaments.
This is not the first time a Pakistan touring squad has faced disciplinary issues abroad, and the recurring nature of these incidents has raised questions about the team’s management and player education programs.
“Representing your country is a privilege, and off-field conduct is just as important as on-field performance,” said a senior PCB official speaking on the condition of anonymity. “The board is committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy regarding harassment or misconduct of any kind.”
The Pakistan squad returned home in batches earlier this week. While the coaching staff prepares their post-tournament report for the PCB, the focus has shifted almost entirely to the disciplinary proceedings. Fans are demanding transparency, and an official statement regarding the player’s future is expected within the next 48 hours.
