1Sri Lanka’s upcoming limited-overs series against Afghanistan has been postponed indefinitely, according to an official announcement from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The decision comes amid rising regional tensions and disruptions to international airspace across parts of the Middle East.
The series was originally scheduled to be played in the United Arab Emirates, with matches set to begin on March 13 in Sharjah. The tour was expected to feature three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) followed by three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between the two national teams.
Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the postponement was primarily due to logistical complications and safety considerations affecting both teams. Increasing instability in the region has led to restrictions and disruptions in several air corridors, making travel arrangements difficult for players, officials, and support staff.
SLC officials explained that organizing an international cricket tour requires precise coordination of travel routes, security arrangements, and venue logistics. With multiple uncertainties surrounding regional flight operations, staging the tour as planned was no longer considered feasible.
The board emphasized that player safety and operational security remain the top priorities, particularly during periods of geopolitical tension that may affect transportation and venue operations.
The matches were scheduled to take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, one of the UAE’s most historic cricket venues. Over the years, Sharjah has hosted numerous international fixtures involving Asian and global cricket teams, often serving as a neutral venue for bilateral series.
Fans were anticipating competitive contests between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, two teams known for their exciting styles of limited-overs cricket. Afghanistan’s strong spin attack and Sri Lanka’s balanced squad were expected to produce an entertaining series across both formats.
The indefinite postponement means that cricket administrators from both boards will now have to explore possible windows in the international calendar to reschedule the series in the future. However, with packed global cricket schedules and upcoming tournaments, finding a suitable timeframe may prove challenging.
Both Sri Lanka Cricket and the Afghanistan Cricket Board are expected to continue monitoring the regional situation before announcing any revised plans. Until then, the planned six-match series remains on hold as officials prioritize safety and logistical stability.
For now, cricket fans will have to wait longer to see the two sides clash, as regional developments continue to shape the international sporting calendar.
