Jamal Musiala has revealed he is suffering from a neurological disorder after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in three days, sending a wave of concern through world football. The Bayern Munich midfielder, one of the most gifted young players in the game, took to social media to reassure fans that the condition is treatable, but the sight of the 23 year old falling to the turf twice in less than a week has inevitably raised serious questions about his health.
Musiala collapsed during Bayern Munich’s pre-season friendly against second division side Heidenheim on Tuesday, falling to the ground just minutes after coming on as a late substitute. The incident was all the more alarming because it came just three days after a near identical episode during Bayern’s home win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.
On both occasions, Musiala appeared dazed as he received medical treatment, and was eventually helped off the pitch. The scenes were distressing for teammates, opponents and supporters alike, and the chants of his name that rang around the stadium as he was treated reflected the affection in which he is held.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed after the Heidenheim match that the club was aware of the situation. “Jamal will speak about this in the near future. We knew about it and we are aware of the situation,” Eberl said.
Rather than allow speculation to run, Musiala addressed the matter directly, posting an update on Instagram that was both candid and reassuring. The Germany international revealed that he has been diagnosed with brief, temporary episodes of absence seizures, caused by a neurological dysfunction.
“I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary but easily treatable episodes of absence seizures, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the episodes that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim,” he wrote.
Musiala was careful to reassure his followers. “The important thing is that there is no further health risk,” he stressed, adding that he was “incredibly grateful for all your messages and your support”. He confirmed he is receiving the best possible medical care and remains “very optimistic” about the future.
Perhaps most strikingly, Musiala revealed that he has chosen to continue playing, with the approval of neurological specialists. “It was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, continue to focus on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football,” he wrote.
The decision reflects Musiala’s determination to not let the condition define him, and his belief that continuing to play is part of his recovery. It is a brave stance, and one that has drawn widespread support from the football community.
Musiala’s talent has never been in question. The 23 year old has established himself as one of the finest attacking midfielders in world football, a player of rare creativity, close control and vision who has been a cornerstone of both Bayern Munich and the German national team.
His career has, however, been punctuated by misfortune. Musiala missed the first six months of last season after suffering a broken ankle at the Club World Cup, and he has had to battle back from that setback to regain his best form.
The neurological issue is the latest challenge in a young career that has already been tested, and the hope across football is that, as Musiala himself insists, the condition proves manageable and does not derail a talent of such promise.
Bayern will now assess Musiala’s condition carefully, with the club’s medical team working closely with neurological specialists to manage the situation. There is no suggestion at this stage that Musiala faces an extended absence, but the priority will clearly be his long term health.
Musiala’s involvement in Bayern’s German Super Cup showdown with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday remains uncertain, and the club will take a cautious approach to his return.
For now, the overwhelming sentiment across football is one of support. Musiala’s courage in speaking openly about his condition has been widely praised, and the messages of goodwill have poured in from teammates, rivals and fans around the world.
Musiala’s revelation is a reminder of the human realities that sit behind the glamour of elite sport. Footballers are not immune to the health challenges that affect the rest of the population, and the pressure to perform at the highest level can sometimes obscure the importance of wellbeing.
His decision to speak openly, and to continue playing with the blessing of specialists, is a personal one that he has clearly made with care. The football world will watch his progress closely, and will hope to see him back on the pitch, doing what he does best, for many years to come.
